Champions league player of the week announced
Due to his heroic performance in his side’s goalless draw against Sevilla on Wednesday night, Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, has been named the Uefa Champions League player of the week.
The 27-year-old beat Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller; Chelsea midfielder, Willian and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Frederico Santos to the award after polling 48% of the total votes after the match.
The Spaniard who has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford pulled eight saves and two clearances to ensure the Red Devils avoid defeat in that fixture.
Willian, the Brazilian forward was voted the second best player of the week after scoring Chelsea’s lone goal in the Blues’ 1-1 draw against Barcelona at the Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. He also stood out for Antonio Conte’s side in that fixture, having had about two of his shots being denied by the woodwork before finally breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute to hand his side the lead. Though, they lost the lead 15 minutes before the end of the match with Lionel Messi scoring his first ever goal against the Premier League side.
Bayern Munich’s forward, Thomas Muller scored a brace in his side’s 5-0 win over Besiktas to earn his place as the third best player according to votes conducted by Uefa. Apart from scoring two goals on the night, Muller also @ssisted Robert Lewandowski’s 5th goal at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night, which means that they are probably going to field their second team to prosecute the second leg in March.
Fred made the nominee list after inspiring his Shakhtar Donetsk side to a 2-1 narrow win over Italian side AS Roma. He scored their winning goal in the 71st minute, after coming from a goal down to win the first leg ahead of the second game in Italy next month.
Man United De Gea joined the club in 2011 from Atletico Madrid and he became an instant hit for the club – winning six titles in the space of seven years.
He is one of the few players that has won the Europa League titles with different clubs (Manchester United and Atletico Madrid) and also won the Uefa Super Cup while in Spain.
